Set up Okta Verify for a new user

Okta Verify is an app that you download from the app store and install on your mobile device. Okta Verify is a Multifactor Authentication (MFA) security feature developed by Okta. Your organization may require you to use Okta Verify to verify your identity before allowing you to sign in to your organization.

How to set up Okta Verify

If you're a new Okta user and your organization requires you to use Okta Verify, follow these steps to sign in to your Okta account:

Step 1 - Install the Okta Verify app

Go to the AppAn abbreviation of application. Essentially, it is a web-based site used to perform any number of specific tasks, and requires authentication from end users by signing in. Store and download and install the Okta Verify app to your device. Okta Verify lets you verify your identity when you attempt to sign in to your organization's Okta account:

Step 2 - Sign in to your Okta account

Once you've downloaded and installed the Okta Verify app from the app store, sign in to your organization's Okta account from your web browser.


  1. Open the web browser on your computer and access your organization's Okta sign-in page. It's located at the web address you use in your desktop browser to access your company portal. Your orgThe Okta container that represents a real-world organization.'s sign-in page web address looks like: 


    where org-name represents the name of your company or organization.


    Don't know your organization's sign-in page web address? Look in your Okta Welcome/Activation email (if you received one during your company’s onboarding process). Your organization’s sign-in page web address is located below the Activate Okta account button.

  3. Enter your username (email address) and your password.
  4. Don't know your username? Your Okta username is created for you by your adminAn abbreviation of administrator. This is the individual(s) who have access to the Okta Administrator Dashboard. They control the provisioning and deprovisioning of end users, the assigning of apps, the resetting of passwords, and the overall end user experience. Only administrators have the Administration button on the upper right side of the My Applications page.. Most new Okta users receive a Welcome email from Okta which contains their username and a link allowing them to create a password and activate their account. If you did not receive a Welcome email, contact your administrator.

Step 3 - Enroll your device with Okta Verify

Now that you've attempted to sign in to Okta with your username and password, enroll your phone or device with Okta Verify. You can think of enrolling a device as Once your device is enrolled, you use Okta Verify on your device to verify your identity each time you sign in to your organization. During device enrollment, Okta Verify uses the camera on your phone or device to scan a barcode (also known as a QR code) on your computer screen. If you can't scan the barcode, see Enroll your device without scanning a barcode.




Currently, you can have only one Okta Verify accountAn Okta Verify account is sometimes referred to as an Okta Verify enrollment. . You can only enroll one device in Okta Verify.


  1. If Okta Verify is required by our organization, the Set up multifactor authentication screen appears the first time you attempt to sign in to Okta.

    If you see an option for Security Key (U2F), your administrator configured it as an additional factor. For more information, contact your administrator.

  3. Under Okta Verify, click Setup to begin the enrollment process. The Set Up Okta Verify screen appears.
  4. Select your device type (iOS, Android, or Windows) and then click Next to continue with device enrollment. The Scan barcode screen appears.
  5. On your phone or device open the Okta Verify app.
  6. Tap + to add a new account. This activates your device's barcode scanner.
  7. Point the camera at the barcode on your computer screen. The camera detects and reads the barcode automatically and your device is enrolled. The web browser on your computer returns to Set up multifactor authentication.

    If you cannot scan the barcode, refer to enroll your device without scanning a QR code.

  8. Click Finish to complete device enrollment.

    You are directed to your Okta homepage. This confirms that device enrollment was successful.

Enroll your device without scanning a barcode

  1. At the Scan barcode step from the Okta Verify Setup screen, click Can't scan?.
  2. Make a note of the secret key displayed in the Secret KeyAn Okta-generated string of characters that allows end users to set up (enroll) their mobile device in to Okta Verify. End users enter the Secret Key in the Okta Verify app during the set up process as an alternative to scanning a QR code. Field , and then tap Next. You will enter the Secret Key into Okta Verify in another step.
  3. On your phone or device open the Okta Verify app and tap the plus sign + to add a new account.
  4. Tap No Barcode? to advance to the next screen.
  5. In the Username field, enter your Okta email address.
  6. In the Secret key field, enter the secret key you noted in step 2.
  7. Tap Add Account. If you entered your credentials correctly, your device is enrolled successfully with Okta Verify without requiring the barcode.
