Regulatory compliance

Regulations vary depending on the originating or receiving country. For example, a recent regulatory change in Malaysia requires that all SMS messages sent to Malaysian phone numbers include branding information such as the company name in the message content. If you have configured policies with authentication or password recovery that use SMS messages, you must customize the SMS text sent to phone numbers in Malaysia to prevent the messages from being blocked.

Configure SMS text in Okta Classic

You can change the SMS text for your default language and add translations for the default SMS text message in other languages.

Changing the default SMS text

To change the default SMS text using the Okta Admin Console:

  1. Sign in to your Okta org using an administrator account.

  2. Click Admin to open the Admin Console.

  3. Click Settings > Email & SMS.

  4. Click SMS.

    On the Email and SMS Customization page, click SMS.

  5. Under Actions for the Default language, click the pencil icon () to edit the default SMS text message.

  6. Edit the default SMS message to include a company name, then click Save.

Translating the default SMS text

To change the SMS text for another language using the Okta Admin Console:

  1. Sign in to your Okta org using an administrator account.

  2. Click Admin to open the Admin Console.

  3. Click Settings > Email & SMS.

  4. Click SMS.

  5. Click Add Translation.

  6. Select a language, for example Malaysian

  7. Replace the default language text with a translation that includes the company name in the SMS message.
