Set up a device access code for macOS

A device access code protects your computer and data by ensuring that only you can sign in to your macOS computer. Okta Verify is used to configure an offline authentication method in addition to the MFA methods that you might already be familiar with. After signing in to your macOS computer, you're asked to sign in to Okta Verify and set up a device access code for your computer. Having a device access code allows you to gain access to your computer, even without an internet connection.

Your administrator has configured a time limit (for example, 48 hours) during which device access must be set up. If this time limit passes without an offline device access code configured, you're forced to set up access.

If you’re locked out or unable to sign in, contact your administrator for assistance.

Your sign-in experience is based on your organization's configuration.

Before you begin

• You must have an Okta Verify account set up on your mobile device. See Set up Okta Verify on Android devices or Set up Okta Verify on iOS devices.

• Ensure you have the latest version of Okta Verify:

  • Okta Verify in the Google Play Store

  • Okta Verify in the Apple App Store

Sign in to Okta

1. Start your macOS computer.

2. Enter your username and password.

3. Before you can access your desktop, the Okta Device Access set up screen appears. Click Continue.

4. Enter your Okta username and click Sign In.

5. A push notification is sent to your mobile device. Tap Yes, it's me on your device to complete the sign in.

6. On your computer, click Continue to start the next phase of the process.

Set up a device access code for offline authentication

1. After signing in to Okta, set up a device access code. Click Continue.

2. Open the Okta Verify app on your mobile device, and tap + to set up a device access code. Choose Organization as the account type.

3. When you’re ready to scan the QR code, tap Yes, Ready to Scan. Follow the prompts on your device to scan the QR code shown on your computer screen.

4. A device access code appears in the Okta Verify app. Enter this code into your computer and then click Continue.

5. Click Finish. Your device access code is ready to use.

Sign in to your macOS computer with a device access code

1. Start your macOS computer.

2. Enter your username and password.

3. Click Okta Verify or Device access code to verify your identity.

4. Open Okta Verify on your mobile device, and follow the prompts for the verification method you chose.

You can now access your macOS computer.
