Supported features

The following features and functionality are available with a Moodle integration.

Feature Description
Push new users
  • Okta provisions new users created in Okta in Moodle.
  • When you assign a new user in Okta, the Username, Password, First name, Last name, and Email fields are required.
  • To ensure compatibility with Okta-generated passwords, configure the Moodle password policy under Site Administration > Security > Site Security Settings to require at least 10 characters, lowercase letters, uppercase letters, numbers, and special characters (using the !@#$%'^" symbols).
Push profile updates
  • Okta pushes user profile updates made in Okta to Moodle. You can update the First name, Last name, and Email fields.
  • You can't update usernames. If you change a username, Okta deactivates the user and creates a new user with the updated username and email address.
Push user deactivation

Deactivating a user or disabling their access in Okta suspends their account in Moodle (suspended = 1).

Import new users

Okta imports up to 5000 users created in Moodle.

Import profile updates

Okta downloads updates made to a user's profile in Moodle and applies them to the local profile fields.

Reactivate users

Reactivating a user in Okta reactivates their account in Moodle (suspended = 0).

Push groups
  • You can push groups and their members to Moodle. See Manage Group Push.
  • Groups in Moodle are course-scoped and you must link them to a course (CourseId is required).
  • The Okta Group Name maps to the name field in the Moodle groups UI.
  • You can update group names and descriptions.
  • If you add a user to a group but they aren't in the group's course, Okta assigns them to the course with the default student role. To join a group, users must be in the course hierarchy.
  • Limitation: You can configure only a single course ID during setup. Because Okta creates all pushed groups under this course, ensure that all groups you intend to push belong to the same course before enabling push groups.
