Backup and restore

Backing up your Access Gateway appliances and configurations is a proactive safeguard against data loss, down-time, and other unwanted negative impacts to your business.

A best practice is to use both of the following backup methods:

  • Virtual environment-based backups: Create image-based backups using the built-in functionality found in hypervisor products such as VMware and VirtualBox. The benefit of image-based backups is that they back up the entire Access Gateway appliance and virtual machine.
  • Access Gateway-based backup and restore: This creates a backup of the current system configuration, including the Okta tenant (IdP), application, datastore, and logging.

Backup

To back up an Access Gateway configuration to a local disk:

  1. Go to your Access Gateway instance.
  2. Select the Logs and Backups tab.
  3. Select a backup from the list of available backups and click its associated Actions > Download.
  4. Enter a password to use to encrypt the backup in the Create password field.
  5. Verify the encryption password by entering it again in the Confirm password field.
  6. Click Continue to create and download the backup.
  7. Save the backup to a local disk.

Restore

To restore a configuration from a backup stored on a local disk:

  1. Go to your Access Gateway instance and open the Access Gateway Admin UI console.
  2. Select the Logs and Backups tab.
  3. Select the Backups pane.
  4. Click Restore from local file.
  5. Go to the location of the backup file and select it.
  6. Enter the password used to encrypt the backup file. Click Continue to upload the backup to the Access Gateway admin instance.
  7. Click Restore to start restoring the configuration and display a progress indicator.
  8. After the restore operation is complete, click Refresh. See Backup FAQs.
